German Gymnasium conversion, London

Shellard Tiles, Lisburn are delighted to have been awarded another exciting tiling contract in London. We will be carrying out the tiling works for the conversion of the spectacular German Gymnasium near King’s Cross station in London which will involve tiling of 400 square metres each of floors and walls, in natural stone, marble and ceramics, as well as granite to two stunning feature staircases. This grand and elegant 930 square metre building is set to be sensitively converted into a stunning new dining destination, boasting a complex of restaurants, bars and private rooms with extensive outdoor terraces.

Originally designed by Edward Gruning, the spectacular Grade II listed building was first built in 1865 for the German Gymnastics Society. It was the first purpose-built gymnasium of its type in England and was used as a venue for the first National Olympic Games one year after construction.

No longer used as a gymnasium, the building has been used as offices, storage and an arts and exhibition space since the war. Its prominent location between King’s Cross and St Pancras place it in the heart of the now up-and-coming destination, where other creative companies such as Central St Martins, Google and Louis Vuitton have chosen to base themselves in recent years.
